Ever since Amber Portwood first appeared on 16 and Pregnant, she’s had some obvious difficulties when it comes to her mental health. It wasn’t long after her screen debut that she sought out treatment for her anxiety, but many of her difficulties went undiagnosed for some time.
As the years went by, she received the diagnoses of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. She has since received treatment and medication to help her. Unfortunately, as many people with mental illnesses know, it’s a difficult battle to fight, especially when you’re on your own.
Somewhere along the way, Amber developed an addiction to certain medications, which eventually lead to her being arrested for drug use compounded with domestic violence against her ex, Gary. Ironically, that’s something she bonded with her ex Matt Baier over when they met. Matt revealed that he had also recently kicked an addiction, so they powered through it together.
Apparently, they also had something else in common: depression. Now, Amber is dropping a suicide bombshell that brought her to tears on camera.

Although depression is a chronic illness, circumstantial factors often play into the sufferer’s experience. That may be why dealing with custody of her daughter Leah has been so difficult for Amber.
She recently opened up about her experience with her daughter after she was called out for being a deadbeat mom. In the last episode of Teen Mom OG, Gary and Amber hash out exactly what’s going on with the soon-to-be mom-of-two.
Gary brings up Amber owing child support, which she promises to get squared away in the following week. “Don’t forget about Leah,” Gary says. Amber responds, “I don’t need to feel any worse than I already do. I never forget Leah. I cry over Leah constantly. You don’t understand.”
She explains that her breakup with Matt brought her to a very difficult place, saying that her depression is getting much worse. Gary breaks it down for her: “You might not want to talk about it, but he came in, took some money, he did his thing.” He adds, “You’re going to cry, you’re going to be happy, you’re going to be sad.”
Amber pushes the fact that she doesn’t want Leah to see her at her lowest points. “I just don’t want to bring Leah around me… You know how she is, she’s so intuitive with things,” Amber voiced. “I don’t want to cry in front of her. I just don’t want her to see me like this.”

Apparently, Matt’s refusal to let Amber go makes it even harder on her. “He just keeps begging me [to get back together] every day,” she tells Gary. Then she drops the suicide bombshell.
“[Matt said] he’s going to kill himself,” she reveals. “He sent me a picture of 20 [hydrocodone pills.]”
However, his access to addictive substances is yet another reason Amber wants to stay away. “He’s sending me pictures of pills!” she says. “Like, I’m not even going to think about getting back with you right now.”
Despite Amber’s tears, Gary points out that there might be some ulterior motives for Matt’s begging. “Has he blown through his money yet?” he asks Amber. “Could that be the motivation? I just want you to keep that in mind.”
It makes sense that Gary would bring that up, considering that Amber recently revealed that Matt robbed her of $120,000 over the time that they were together.
Apparently, Matt got out of his suicidal state. He’s now married to a Las Vegas waitress!
