Fans and music lovers across the world to devastated to hear that songwriter and performer Demi Lovato was recently hospitalized for an apparent heroin overdose. According to Celebuzz, Demi was rushed to the hospital on July 24 after her apparent OD.
In the past, Demi has spoken out about her struggles with eating disorders, drug addiction, and self-harm, an she revealed that she relapsed earlier this year after six years of sobriety.
Needless to say, Demi’s relapse and overdose has resulted in an outpouring of love and concern for the star. Among those showing support are individuals who have battled addiction themselves, such as Jenelle Evans. Now, Jenelle is speaking out about her experiences as an addict in the wake of Demi’s OD.
“If you need help or support in time of immediate need, please seek it,” Jenelle Evans tweeted soon after news about Demi’s OD broke. “Hearing this news about [Demi Lovato] breaks my heart. I hope she’s okay. You’re strong girl, don’t let the devil drag you down.”
Jenelle then opened up about her own experiences with addiction. “Please find someone you trust, tell them the truth, ask for help,” she tweeted. She added, “It’s ok, promise. It’s scary, it’s embarrassing, but being sober is better than being dead.”
Jenelle spilled just how dangerous her addiction was in her memoir, where she explained that her addiction cold have even been fatal.
In her memoir, Read Between The Lines: Diary of a Teenage Mom, Jenelle recalled using a lot of drugs during her relationship with Kieffer.
“I did a lot of heroin and weed,” she wrote in the memoir. “That was all I did. Just smoked and shot up and laid around chillin.”
Only around a week into this drug-heavy lifestyle, Jenelle woke up on the bathroom floor only to discover she had overdosed on heroin.
“I had no idea how long I was out or what I did during the time,” she wrote. “It was scary, not knowing. I asked Kieffer why I was lying on the f*cking floor. Kieffer sid I passed out.”
Jenelle demanded why Kieffer didn’t take her to the hospital if he knew that she had passed out while on heroin. But all Kieffer had to say was “Sometimes that happens.”
“He meant that it was just a thing that happens on heroin,” Jenelle wrote in her memoir. “Sometimes you just blackout. Sometimes you lie around on the bathroom floor while your boyfriend enjoys his high… Sometimes you go down and you don’t get back up.”
This incident was a huge wakeup call for Jenelle, who soon checked into a hospital for detox. Jenelle has since cleaned up, but Kieffer didn’t follow in her footsteps. According to a local news source the Post-Gazette, Kieffer was arrested after police discovered that he was operating a meth lab in January 2018.
“Police received multiple complaints about a possible meth lab in the basement apartment and had been investigating it for a few weeks,” according to the outlet. “Upon conducting a search warrant, they found items and chemicals to substantiate the claim.”
Apparently, Kieffer was running this all by himself. “Mr. Delp is believed to have operated the meth lab on his own,” the Post-Gazette reports. “There are no other suspects at this time.”
According to the outlet, Kieffer’s bail was set at $50,000, which he was unable to produce. He is currently being held in Allegheny County Jail, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled to take place on Jan. 23. The Post-Gazette reports that Kieffer “faces felony charges related to the manufacturing and distribution of methamphetamines and the improper disposal of chemicals.”
Considering how far Jenelle has come regarding her addiction, fans were supportive of her sentiment.
“For once I can agree with Jenelle’s sentiments. She lived that life and came out on the other end, so she understands,” wrote orangepeeling on reddit. “I actually appreciate this from her as a former addict. She makes a lot of bad choices, but, this is a great sentiment,” agreed stephacrazy.
However, not everyone agreed. “While the intent behind the post is positive, this just smacks of Jenelle trying to involve herself in current news,” wrote xkrsx. “This would seem a lot more powerful to me if she asked for help and was actually living sober, which she's clearly not,” theorized abortionleftovers. User ChristinaCBasicB*tch wrote, “Honestly I think she’s trying to deflect bad attention away from herself.”
Others began to consider the difference between fan reaction to Demi Lovato’s overdose and Ryan Edwards’ recent relapse and arrest.
Ryan Edwards was busted by cops driving with a significant amount of heroin in his possession in late April before his more recent relapse.
According to a citation from Red Bank City Court in Tennessee and published by Radar Online, 30-year-old Ryan Edwards was pulled over at traffic stop because he had an expired tag. One officer noticed that Ryan had an open backpack in the passenger seat with hypodermic needles inside.
“I asked Edwards if he had any medical conditions and he replied, ‘No,’” the citation published by Radar reads. “I then asked why he had a hypodermic needle in his backpack and he replied, ‘I don’t know.’ I told them that the vehicle will be searched and he should inform me if there are more and Edwards replied, ‘Yes, probably.’”
When the vehicle was searched, police found fourteen hypodermic needles in Ryan’s possession. One of them was loaded with heroin, and there was also a “bag tied in the center console with a dark substance inside,” reports Radar. When the police officer asked what it was, Ryan replied, “It’s heroin and I have a problem.”
Officers also found two silver spoons with residue as well as a scale. Ryan was in possession of 1.8 grams of heroin.
Ryan wasn’t arrested, but he was issued a misdemeanor citation for simple possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Ryan pled guilty and was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days in jail. However, his sentence was suspended for his payment of $750 and good behavior. Ryan was then ordered to take drug screenings for six months.
Now, fans are experiencing something of deja vu. On July 23, Ryan was arrested and booked with no bond once again. He was “Booked on Previous Charge or Other Reason” in his home state of Tennessee.
According to gossip site The Ashley, Ryan’s charge was listed as “possession of controlled substance.” His court date is set for August 6th.
Fans were quick to sound off about this update. “Jesus f*ck,” wrote user PygmyFists on reddit. “Somebody needs to f*cking help him. His family and Mack aren't doing him any favors. Somebody really needs to step in, and help him get better. Idc if they put him in jail or rehab or whatever the f*ck. Ryan needs help.”
Recently, a tweet has been circulating the fandom about Demi and Ryan that reads, “Demi Lovato does heroin - tons of love and support and well wishes. Ryan Edwards does heroin - he’s a piece of sh*t loser, etc. Don’t @ me with any bullsh*t.”
However, not everyone agreed with that sentiment. “Ryan was all those things before he ever touched drugs,” wrote Mecryyou on reddit. “Demi is very open about her struggles. Demi didn’t have a baby young. Demi didn’t get married. Demi isn’t expecting another child while still not having her shit together. Demi isn’t threating to kill her ex and their family ,” wrote Momofboyses. They added, “Demi seems like her issues are about herself and herself alone. Whereas Ryan plays the blame game with everyone. Demi comes out and says, whoops! I f*cked up guys. My bad. Ryan doesn’t do that. It’s always someone else’s fault. Ryan was a turd before he was on drugs. Heroin or not he’s a turd.”
“So hard to understand why a childless young woman that struggles with self harm and has been working since she could walk somehow garners more sympathy than a deadbeat dad that kills cats and has never held a job outside of reality TV. Who knows,” added wignewton. Nvm_the_barking_dog wrote, “There is a difference between relapsing after 6 years of sobriety and lying about sobriety for years before incarceration forces you to get clean. Demi is also open about her struggle with addiction and mental health issues - Ryan lives in a world of denial and tries to gaslight everyone around him, including his closest loved ones. I don’t deny that addiction is a real life struggle for both of these individuals, but one of them takes personal responsibility for their life choices and does what they can to overcome and the other does not.”
