Catelynn and Tyler have been through it all since the days of their teenage pregnancy. Recently, it seemed like the Teen Mom couple had hit their breaking point, but a new report suggests that they'll be okay!
Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra have the distinction of being the only couple that has been together since the earliest days of 16 and Pregnant.
They also stood out as the only teen parents who gave their daughter up for adoption. Since then, Tyler and Catelynn have struggled publicly with the consequences of that decision.
For the past few months, fans have speculated that the couple was facing trouble. Many have even worried that they are headed for divorce! Tyler has poked fun at the divorce rumors. In May, he posted an Instagram photo of the two, with the caption, “Damn! I think divorce looks pretty good on us,” tagging his wife.
However, the couple’s time apart, as well as the serious issues plaguing them, has continued to fuel rumors that they are on the rocks.
The scandal started when Catelynn made a small change to her Instagram account that did not go unnoticed by fans. After years of being “Catelynn Baltierra” on her profile, she suddenly changed her last name to “Catelynn Lowell!” The small change had clear implications, and fans were quick to theorize that they were headed for divorce.
Catelynn confronted the rumors on MTV’s Total Request Live. One fan wanted to hear from the source. “Why did you decide to temporarily change your last name to Lowell on Instagram?” asked a member of the crowd.
“I think that’s funny,” Catelynn replied on the show, looking a little annoyed. “Even if I did, what if I wanted to go back to Lowell? Why does that matter?”
She explained, “I got a new phone and deleted social media, and I had to go on to post something. When I logged back in, I don’t know if it went back to the original settings or what, but people freaked out about it.”
This is not the first time Tyler and Catelynn have hit a bump in the road. They appeared on Couples Therapy in 2013.
Though Tyler had proposed in 2012, counseling helped them make the decision that they were not ready for marriage. Tyler said to In Touch magazine, "We're just a normal couple. We're not the perfect princess story. We get in arguments and we say things that we regret. We apologize and move on."
Then, in 2014, Catelynn became pregnant with their second child and this time, they were ready to be parents. In fact, they were ready for another big step. Shortly before their daughter’s birth, Tyler proposed again and the couple married in 2015.
After she gave birth to their daughter, Novalee, Catelynn suffered from intense postpartum depression. She became dependent on weed to get her through the day. Eventually she was able to recover with treatment, but, as we all know, it wasn’t a straight path upward for Catelynn.
Catelynn went to rehab to treat her depression and anxiety in November. Tyler posted a photo of the two on Instagram captioned: "We just dropped her off. We haven’t held each other & just cried like that for a long time. Even after 12 years, I continue to be AMAZED by her strength, vulnerability, & courage to get help. “As long as I am alive, you will never be alone” - It is my call to arms & I will fight this war with her right by her side, we will not surrender to this...I will go to battle EVERY TIME for her! #KeepTalkingMH”
Catelynn told Radar Online, “I’m taking the time I need right now to take good care of myself. On November 17th, I thought of every way possible to commit suicide, from wrapping a belt around my neck to just running my car into an electric pole.”
Despite her difficulties, Catelynn is maintaining a positive attitude. “I’m seeking treatment and I WILL get better,” she said. “This won’t last forever.”
Tyler added on Twitter, “Incredibly proud of my wife…when she thought she had no choices left, she reached out & decided to LIVE today! My life would be desolate without her in it. You are beautiful, strong, worthy, & loved.”
As the most recent season of Teen Mom OG aired, it revealed the reason for her visit to rehab. Catelynn suffered a miscarriage after she got pregnant with Tyler’s third child.
A source told The Ashley’s Reality Roundup, “The crew and production staff heard she was about six weeks pregnant when it happened, but no one is 100% sure.”
Even more traumatizing, they shared, “Catelynn had to talk about trying to get pregnant and then getting pregnant even after she had the miscarriage” to record the voiceovers for the show.
“It was very traumatic,” Tyler recalled on Teen Mom OG. It was clear that he was extremely shaken by this update as well. “You see her shaking and she got blood everywhere, you don’t know what to do.”
After Catelynn stopped losing blood, it became clear what had happened. “She kind of cleaned herself up and we figured what was going on.” Then, the couple shut down. “We sat in the bed and cried. Just held each other. There’s nothing you can really do.”
Catelynn got medical attention to confirm that she had indeed miscarried. It wasn’t much longer after that that Catelynn checked into a treatment center for having suicidal thoughts.
Tyler said the process “felt very similar” to the trauma of Carly’s adoption. “Carly’s a little different because we get to see her every year, but it’s a loss. I feel like you process it as a loss,” he explained.
Though Catelynn received criticism for her decision to go to Arizona for help, she remained steadfast in her decision. “I wasn't "running away" from my problems I was FIXING them! Working HARD & getting on the right medication,” she tweeted. “I wouldn't wish this crap on my worst enemy! But I guess I'll have haters no matter what! Just glad I got myself better and if ppl r mad then be mad I guess.”
Unfortunately, her first visit to rehab was not her last. Catelynn shared in January, “I’m going back to treatment people for 6 weeks to work on my trauma and getting on different meds.”
"I feel way better," Catelynn later told Kailyn Lowry on her podcast Coffee Convos.
She shared that she is on a new regimen of medication for her mental health. "I did genetic testing and found out that the medication I was on for five years doesn't even work for me. So they put me on different medications and they seem to be working really well."
Catelynn has shared what a positive effect she thinks medication has had, tweeting, “When someone tells you that “you need to get off of meds” PLEASE! SNRI’s saved my life!”
Tyler has also been open about his struggles with mental illness as well. . Tyler opened up on Voices for Change 2.0 that he attempted suicide at age 11. He shared that he has been diagnosed on the “bipolar spectrum” and attends therapy regularly.
Tyler has fed the gossip about a divorce with his dark poetry. He frequently shares his writing on Twitter and Instagram.
In one he writes:
"It’s like my brain is so scattered that the moment I feel like I get what I’m after while climbing this ladder this person in the mirror just smiles through laughter, then smacks me in the face which starts the chase to this inevitable race to feeling broken, beaten, devalued, out of place & now I’m all off pace. It just leaves me shattered and every time I think about my life, my brain becomes battered with only one question…does my life really even matter!?"
The rumors of a separation hit an all-time high this week when Catelynn posted snapchats from Arizona. Fans immediately concluded that she must be back in rehab again and they were quick to criticize her decision.
surly_elk wrote, “For her treatment to be effective, she needed to stay until stabilized (which she did) and then follow through with treatment at home (which she did not).” They added, “She seems to have made this a cycle, and what people are saying is if she's not willing to come home and commit to follow up care, then she should try something else instead of staying in this rehab cycle.”
However, Catelynn’s dad, David, informed Radar Online that she is not in treatment. He explained, “It’s couple’s counseling for a week. They are just brushing up on some therapy.”
Another source confirmed to Radar that the couple “definitely did take a break for a very short amount of time, privately.” The source explained, “They did it to just figure things out so Cate could find out who she is outside of her mental illness.”
Radar reported that the couple is “working on their relationship…slowly getting to a better place.”
Tyler already seems more optimistic. He recently tweeted a new poem:
"Perfection is boring
Because I believe imperfections are what make up our story
It’s what makes us all different
& it’s actually pretty glorious
If you think about it
So embrace your differences
& label yourself
Don’t let opinions define your worth
Assert oneself into a new birth
A rebirth of yourself with new words
& let these words be the guide
To your new life filled with pride"
So if Tyler and Catelynn are working things out, what is next for the couple?
On her podcast, Kailyn asked if the couple was considering having more children.
"I want more kids," Tyler spilled on the show earlier this spring. "I definitely do."
“We definitely want more kids,” Catelynn agreed. “Especially after the miscarriage and stuff." But she added that they’re taking it day by day. "We're kind of not rushing into things right now, because we were there, and then I had the miscarriage, and then I just went downhill, so I want to make sure that I'm healthy and happy,” she explained.
