By now, it’s old news that Farrah Abraham is off of Teen Mom OG... but who will be taking her place? Although there were a number of girls in the running for her replacement, MTV’s decision came totally out of left field. In fact, they’ve left many fans shocked and even angry!
When 16 and Pregnant producers first had the idea to create a spinoff of their show,
they likely had no idea how big Teen Mom would become. Now that the show has proved its impact by lasting on the network for nearly a decade and becoming one of MTV’s most popular franchises, it’s clear they have something special on their hands… or at least something very popular.

It’s hard to say exactly what it is about Teen Mom that draws fans in the way that it does, but it’s easy to guess that the cast members themselves provide most of the appeal. After all, many have been watching them grow and learn from their mistakes from the very beginning. But recently, the cast has gone through a major shakeup that threatened to change everything.
After a series of disagreements and fights, Farrah Abraham was recently fired from her place on Teen Mom OG. It became clear that she couldn’t see eye-to-eye with the cast or with the standards that MTV wanted to hold her to, so she and the network decided to part ways. It should go without saying that this wasn’t a particularly happy split, and Farrah had some nasty words to share about the network. It certainly changed Farrah’s life, but it also changed Teen Mom OG in a major way.
In fact, at first, fans could hardly believe the news that Farrah was no longer part of the cast. But after MTV confirmed it, they finished out the rest of the season of Teen Mom OG with only three girls: Catelynn, Maci, and Amber. Obviously, these three have had a rocky relationship with Farrah for years, so they weren’t too torn up about her loss. But considering that Teen Mom 2 recently gained a cast member, it was a bit strange to have only three cast members for Teen Mom OG.
Not everyone had a problem with it though: many viewers were happy that each of their favorite cast members got much more time on the show and that there was less intense drama all around. But soon it came out that MTV wasn’t going to let Amber, Catelynn, and Maci be the only cast members for very long.
It didn’t take much time before news began leaking that MTV was considering different replacements for Farrah. For some time, it seemed that the network had narrowed their options down to two girls who had something pretty major in common.
Both of their options were named Mackenzie!
At first, it appeared that MTV was going to replace Farrah with 16 and Pregnant star Mackenzie McKee. Mackenzie had a role on MTV’s less popular show Teen Mom 3 that was only on air for one season before getting cancelled -- the same show that Briana DeJesus originally starred on. Nonetheless, Mackenzie has stayed one of the most popular members of the franchise, and MTV considered switching her over to the OG cast.
At the time, many outlets including The Ashley’s Reality Roundup reported that Mackenzie Mckee would be stepping up for a role on Teen Mom OG. The outlet reported that Mackenzie was in fact battling Briana for the Teen Mom 2 position, but that she was eventually passed up for the role.
“There’s a production team that’s been going to Oklahoma to film Mackenzie over the past few weeks,” a crew member informed The Ashley back in February, around the time that Farrah’s firing was confirmed. “Right now, they are planning to use that footage to do a ‘Teen Mom’ special. It will likely be ‘Being Mackenzie’ but that hasn’t been totally confirmed yet.”
In the meantime, there was another Mackenzie that was being considered for the slot: Ryan Edwards’ wife, Mackenzie Standifer. Given that Mackenzie just confirmed that she is pregnant for the second time, the timing couldnt’ be any better. According to The Ashley, MTV was even in talks with Mackenzie Standifer about taking over the role.
“They are planning to pay her around $3,000 an episode to take the fourth spot on ‘Teen Mom OG,’” a source told The Ashley. They added, “That would obviously be significantly less than the other girls make. It is not a done deal yet, but the consensus is that Mackenzie Edwards will get the spot. Recently, they’ve been filming her life with Ryan for Maci [Bookout]‘s segment almost more than Maci’s life. Plus, she was a teenage mother so it kind of makes sense.”
When news of MTV’s considerations for Farrah’s replacements leaked, fans were divided. Some were excited about one of the Mackenzies joining the cast, but both of the girls are controversial for their own reasons. In fact, many fans simply wanted MTV to leave the cast alone, keeping the number of girls at three. Obviously there was a lot of division in the cast when it comes to which Mackenzie should replace Farrah, so imagine fans’ surprise when MTV decided to go with neither Farrah!
Instead of staying with a Teen Mom or 16 and Pregnant alum, MTV has decided to hire someone who has never been on any of the other shows in the franchise!
According to The Ashley, Farrah’s replacement will be MTV star known for her appearances on Are You The One? and The Challenge according to the outlet’s sources.
Cheyenne Floyd and her baby daddy Cory Wharton will be the newest addition to the Teen Mom OG cast!
The network came to this decision after they realized fans weren’t interested in either Mackenzie joining the cast. “[The network] realized that the fans weren’t going to be excited about either option,” the source told The Ashley. “So they continued to look.”
Cheyenne and Cory recently welcomed their now one-year-old daughter, Ryder. In addition to not being a previous cast member of Teen Mom or 16 and Pregnant, there’s something else that makes Cheyenne a shocking choice: she didn’t have her first pregnancy until she was 24! We don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound very Teen Mom to us.
It may be a controversial choice, but The Ashley’s source confirms that MTV has made its final decision.
“It’s official,” the source said. “The only way this doesn’t happen is if Cheyenne or Cory backs out, but contracts have likely already been signed so it’s highly unlikely.”
Cheyenne and Cory will certainly be bringing their own drama. Cheyenne first appeared on season 3 of Are You THe One and Cory first appeared on The Real World: EX-Plosion. The couple met when they appeared on The Challenge: Rivals III. But their relationship hasn’t always gone smoothly: when Cheyenne discovered she was pregnant, she pulled a Kailyn and refused to reveal who her baby daddy was for several months.
According to a source at The Challenge, Ashley and Cory were aware they were in the runnings for the position, so they have been “playing up the ‘happy co-parents’ role,” The Ashley reports.
“Their co-parenting relationship is nowhere near as happy as they try to make it out to be on social media,” the source clarified. “They will fit in perfectly on ‘Teen Mom.'”
Whether fans like it or not, it appears that the process is already underway. A source revealed that MTV has already sent film crews to Los Angeles to begin filming next week.
And it appears that many fans do not like it.
“So they chose someone who has never been a part of the franchise, ever? That seems like a poor choice, especially with the pool of dramatic 16&P girls they have to choose from.
I'm not interested in learning this girls story or anything about her. I will not be watching her segments. User chrissycakes8726 agreed, “WTH! What happened with Mackenzie McKee??? This is bullsh*t! This girl isn't a part of this franchise in any way shape or form. She also had her first kid at 24...that's not even close to a teen Mom.” GlitzAndGrit echoed the sentiment, writing “I'm not liking this decision. Not only is she not from the 16&P/TM shows, she was boring on MTV's Challenge (never watched Are You The One so can't speak to that), and she's not even a teen mom.”
They went on, “I have absolutely no interest in her story and will likely fast forward through her scenes. They honestly should have just kept it at 3 girls. Why do they feel there's such a need to have 4 girls?” Some have even threatened to stop watching after this change goes into action.
“This is one of the dumbest fucking ideas ever and I hope it ends up not being true. Otherwise... Yikes. Like what's even the thought process behind this? "Okay, we need a Farrah replacement, but instead of choosing literally anyone even remotely connected to the franchise, let's pick some nobody from one of our other middling reality shows. Surely this will resonate with the fans".
“If this is true I might actually quit watching OG lmao it's been dull as hell for years and I don't think this new chick will help that. User tankbarzal wrote, “I've been thinking that cancelling the show is the only way I'd stop watching but honestly this could be it.”
In fact, even some of the cast members themselves seem opposed to the idea. When Mackenzie McKee was being considered for the role, Catelynn Lowell made it very clear that she wasn’t happy with the idea. “They can’t [bring in another girl to our show] because we’re the OG’s, the original girls,” she said at the time. “If you do that, it won’t be the original girls anymore.” Kailyn agreed with the senitment.
But not everyone was quite so worked up about this idea.
… At least, theoretically. We were unable to find any fans who had anything positive to say about the change. Even those who are a fan of Cheyenne and Cory have no interest in her becoming part of the Teen Mom OG cast.
Is it possible that MTV has just made a decision that will ultimately mean the demise of the Teen Mom franchise? With masses of fans threatening to stop watching the show after a season of questionable ratings, it’s no wonder that many believe that Teen Mom may be on its last legs as a whole. In fact, many of the cast member seem to be attempting to secure spin-offs and new shows in case their main source of income tanks soon.
Kailyn Lowry and Leah Messer have even been discussing the possibility of having a dual spinoff!
Luckily for the cast members, being on television for ten years has given them ample time to build up a massive fanbase. Even if Teen Mom is cancelled soon, many of the cast members will still have a huge following that will tune into whatever their next venture is.
Even while Teen Mom is still on air, it hasn’t been uncommon for the cast to dip their toes into other ventures. Nearly all of the cast members have used their social media accounts to earn additional income by promoting products online, and some of them have even created their own products. But Kailyn Lowry has a specific idea in mind when it comes to expanding her Teen Mom reach.
Kailyn has always been open about her goals to work in television down the road. Now that she’s completed her degree in communications, she’s one step closer to that goal. Even though she’s admitted she’s not entirely sure what she wants to do, she’s explained that she has an interest in working on the production side of TV.
In the meantime, Kailyn is racking up experience in communications by hosting her own podcast with fellow reality star Lindsey Chrisley. Their show, Coffee Convos is notorious for spilling all of the Teen Mom tea. But apparently Kailyn has big plans for the rest of her career in television as well.
Now she’s got an idea for a spinoff that would feature her and Leah Messer. It’s left fans wondering if Kailyn has put serious thought into ending her time at Teen Mom 2!
Kailyn Lowry and Leah Messer have a lot in common. In addition to both going through pregnancies at a young age, they’re both divorcées, and they both have three children. There’s just one major difference between them: while Kailyn has three sons, Leah has three daughters! That got Kailyn thinking.
“I’ve thinking [Leah Dawn and I] should swap kids for a few days to see what it’s like to be a mom of boys/girls,” Kailyn tweeted, adding, “#teenmom2.”
She even addressed her tweet to MTV and the Teen Mom official Twitter, writing, “Let’s make this happen!”
Her co-stars seem on board as well. Chelsea responded, “Yeess this would be cute!” But fans had mixed opinions about the idea.
“Kails, thirst for a spin off is embarrassing,” wrote reddit user BobbyHatesYou. User wadamelin wrote, “Kail, stop trying to get a spinoff show now that it’s clear that tm has finally run its course and will be over soon. No one is interested in seeing you on tv anymore. Put your degree to use.”
Some didn’t think there was a big enough difference between the kids. User mpr1011 wrote, “I get people love the ‘boy mom’ vs ‘girl mom’ thing but Kailyn and Leah’s kids just act like kids. I’m not explaining it right but both houses have their moments because there’s 3 kids running around and playing, it doesn’t look like “boy mom” chaos vs “girl mom” chaos, it’s just chaos.”
User orangepeeling agreed, “I’m kind of a stick in the mud when it comes to the purported vast differences between parenting boys and parenting girls. All kids can be rambunctious, and I’m just not sold on the idea that boys are somehow more rambunctious than girls are due to magical gender characteristics; if a boy is rowdier than a girl it’s because they’ve been raised to behave that way.”
They went on, “And based on what we’ve seen it looks like Leah’s girls are much more rambunctious than Kali’s boys. The idea of trading parents for a day could be interesting, but it would bug me if it was marketed as ‘Watch these teen moms deal with children of a different gender’ rather than simply dealing with different children altogether.”
But some were even concerned that Kailyn is desperate for a spin-off because she’s worried about what’s going to happen when Teen Mom inevitably ends.
“Kail is going to be in for a rude awakening when the show finally ends and she has to live in the real world,” wrote blanchedeverheaux. “It’s like she knows the end is near and is trying to find ways to keep it going. For everyone who says Javi is fame hungry, Kail is way worse in my opinion.”
They added, “The likelihood of her finding future employment in normal society is slim to none (I forgot where I read something on past reality stars and this situation) and even if she did they sure as shit wouldn’t put up with her narcissistic temper tantrums she likes to throw.”
But not everyone was so skeptical. User ledaclone wrote, “I think this is a cute idea and I would 100% watch that shit. Kail’s boys seem so chill and sweet and Leah’s girlses are wild and rambunctious.. I’d love to see how they manage a whole slew of kids opposite of what they’re used to (gender and personality wise haha).”
