The other 'Teen Mom' shows have been renewed for another season, but MTV is still working on a new show! Who are the new moms going to be?
MTV changed teenage motherhood forever when its groundbreaking reality series 16 and Pregnant premiered in 2009 with an episode about a Tennessee sweetheart, Maci Bookout. The show followed the girls through their pregnancy, the birth, and all the struggles in between.
The original show had 5 seasons over as many years. It was a wildly popular show and eventually inspired a TV empire.
Before the first year was over, MTV had already aired the first spinoff: Teen Mom. It followed four of the six girls from Season 1: Maci, Farrah Abraham, Amber Portwood, and Catelynn Lowell. The show initially aired from 2009 to 2012, and it was revived in 2015. The new show focused on the challenges faced after birth: fights with their family, baby daddy drama, drugs, and more.
Catelynn was notable among the cast, as the only mom who chose to give her baby up for adoption. Her segments typically focused on her struggle to come to terms with the difficult decision that she made.
After two seasons, MTV announced the show’s sequel Teen Mom 2. This would follow girls from season 2: Jenelle Evans, Chelsea Houska, Kailyn Lowry, and Leah Messer. It premiered in 2011 and is now on its 8th season.
Teen Mom 3 aired in 2013, but it was cancelled after one season. Fan favorite Briana DeJesus joined the cast of Teen Mom 2 last year, despite protests from the other moms on the show.
Both Teen Mom OG and Teen Mom 2 have been renewed for an additional season. Though many of the moms have threatened to quit in the past, the first one to permanently leave the show was Farrah. She was fired from the show in an explosion of controversy in the fall.
First, she announced on her Instagram and in a live show on the adult-streaming site, CamSoda , that she was fired by MTV. She blamed her return to the adult entertainment industry and MTV’s “sex-shaming” for the firing. However, MTV eventually aired footage of the incident that caused them to terminate the outspoken star.
“I know I don’t like you, and I know I don’t even want to f**king look at you,” Farrah blasts a producer as she sits in a car. “F**k you and your excuses.”
Later, producer Morgan J. Freeman tells her, “The amount of work that goes into keeping you happy with crew has bubbled up to a point that we have to figure out if we move forward.” He emphasizes, “Out of nine moms, you’re the only one that’s the problem.”
Next season, Teen Mom OG will be featuring some fresh faces in Farrah’s place. It was recently announced that Bristol Palin is joining the show! The daughter of former GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is making $250,000 to appear on the first season of the show, according to Us Weekly.
Bristol has three children: her son Tripp and her daughters, Sailor and Atlee.
She married her husband and the father of her two daughters,Dakota Meyer in 2016. Dakota is an outspoken veteran and the youngest person to ever be awarded the Medal of Honor. Though he filed for divorce in February, noting on the papers it was due to “discord or conflict of personalities,” the couple since appears to have reconciled.
“MTV has been shooting with her already,” the source tells The Ashley's Reality Roundup . “They’ve been out there filming her for the last few weeks under a code name. It’s likely that someone in the Palin camp leaked the news to TMZ.”
Bristol confirmed the announcement on Instagram, writing, "I am excited to join MTV's Teen Mom OG. I look forward to sharing my experiences and hope that I can help others on their journey."
The Ashley’s sources shared that Bristol was initially cast because Maci was refusing to film. “She basically told production and crew that she wasn’t going to film if Ryan Edwards was filming because she didn’t want his drug struggles to play out on TV anymore. She didn’t want Bentley to be able to watch that go down," the source revealed.
There is still a pervasive online rumor that a fifth cast member will also be joining Teen Mom OG. The moms surely are not happy about the changes. In March, Catelynn said on Kailyn's podcast, “They can’t [bring in another girl to our show] because we’re the OG’s, the original girls. If you do that, it won’t be the original girls anymore.”
TMZ reported that Teen Mom OG will still be following in Teen Mom 2’s footsteps in adopting a Teen Mom 3 alum.
TMZ maintains that Mackenzie McKee will be taking a fifth spot on Teen Mom OG. She has been rumored to join the OG cast since she posted a snapchat in her living room that featured Teen Mom producer Morgan J. Freeman.
Fans will recognize her husband, Josh McKee from her 16 and Pregnant days. Since then, the couple has married and now has three children.
The Ashley, however, is adamant that a fifth spot will be taken by Cheyenne Floyd, an MTV reality star. Cheyenne, former star of Are You The One? and The Challenge, is the mother of 1-year-old Ryder. Cheyenne was initially unwilling to share the details of her baby’s father, but she came under the microscope last December when it was revealed that her baby daddy was a former co-star, Cory Wharton.
“Out with the old, in with the new. You guys are boring they want ratings,” Cory tweeted.
Though there are shake-ups in the OG cast, Teen Mom 2 is on track for its next season. However, contract negotiations have been particularly controversial this time. According to The Ashley’s Reality Roundup, Briana was persuaded with a “big pay increase” even after she had threatened to quit the show. Evidently though, Jenelle is holding out and refusing to sign unless they allow David Eason to be around filming. David was fired after a series of homophobic tweets.
A source clarified, “[Jenelle] doesn’t care if he isn’t shown on-camera or paid. She told [the producer] that if she is filming at their home, she is not going to make David leave.”
Allegedly, even Leah had her own demands. A source claimed Leah wanted "MTV to pay for a professional makeup artist to do her makeup before she filmed,” but was turned down.
Surprisingly, the newest member of the franchise: Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant, has also been renewed! The Ashley’s Reality Roundup reported that Young & Pregnant has also been picked up for a second season! Despite the latest spinoff’s lack of mainstream popularity, sources say they are already filming.
The Ashley reported that all 5 girls will return for a second season. Though Ashley Jones has famously slammed MTV producers, even she will appear on season 2. A source spilled that a raise helped to persuade them all to resign.
Even by the wild standards of the Teen Mom franchise, these girls have lives filled with drama. Ashley has had an angry and sometimes violent relationship with her boyfriend, Bar Smith, and his family that was captured on-and-off screen over the course of the first season. Brianna Jaramillo got pregnant while on a break from her long-term transgender boyfriend.
Kayla Sessler has struggled in her tumultuous relationship with her cheating boyfriend, but does not know if she wants to raise her baby alone after being raised by a single mother. Lexi Tatman, a former cheerleader and “popular girl,” feels alone now as a teen mom. Jade Cline is struggling to grapple with her own pregnancy while she deals with her parents’ addiction issues.
Though they have found an abundance of new talent for the franchise, MTV is still on the hunt for more moms. A casting call for a new Teen Mom show has been making the rounds on the Internet.
This is not the first time MTV has teased viewers a peek at new shows in the franchise. Fans still lament the loss of Teen Mom New Jersey.
In the summer of 2017, they announced the new show and promised that further details would come in the fall. However, no one ever had the chance to meet the moms! The Ashley’s Reality Roundup reported that the show was cancelled before even one episode aired! That particular spinoff was being produced by a different production company from the rest of the franchise, which may have contributed to its demise.
The new casting call explains the show’s goal is to give viewers a look inside the realities of young pregnancy-from morning sickness to managing relationships with boyfriends and/or parents and everything in-between, ultimately to the day of the baby’s arrival and beyond.”
MTV explains that they are seeking “fun, charismatic, and outgoing young women, who appear to be between the ages of 16-21, who would like to share their personal story about this life-changing and complicated journey.”
The casting call is looking for women who are due between October and December of this year. If they stick to MTV’s normal timeline for filming and airing the footage, this means we can expect a new set of “teen moms” next spring!
However, some fans are confused by the announcement. N8toxic21 asked on reddit, “They are filming season two of young and pregnant yet hiring MORE girls?! What??”
Squeel questioned, “What is this for?” and suggested, “Young and Pregnant 2?”
