Over the years, we’ve seen the Teen Mom cast members overcome endless challenges and difficulties and accomplish some incredible milestones in their lives. Many of the stars have gotten married or graduated college on the show, but there’s nothing that screams adulthood more than owning your own home. So what do you do when it’s threatening to collapse?
Jenelle Evans has more than enough difficulty on her plate lately, but one of her problems might be more time-sensitive than the rest. Even though she’s been battling exes, haters, and even her mother, it seems there’s something much more pressing on her plate: her house could be on the verge of being destroyed!
Be sure to keep reading to watch a deleted scene from Teen Mom 2!
Having been on Teen Mom 2 for several years, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen some major phases of Jenelle Evans’ life come and go. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to keep track of when they start and stop, since they often seem to focus around her rapidly changing boyfriends, fiancé, and “soulmates.”
When she dated her first “soulmate” Kieffer, for example, Jenelle was pretty much living the stoner lifestyle. While she was dating her second baby daddy Nathan, she got into fitness and supported his bodybuilding. Now that she’s married to David Eason, she’s become a total outdoorswoman, hanging out in camo and living her best life in the North Carolina wilderness.
Fans might not always be thrilled with the changes that David has made in Jenelle’s life, but since she locked it down, it looks like he’s here to stay.
In fact, he and Jenelle took a major milestone together by buying their own property and making it their own.
Commonly known as “The Land” by fans, Jenelle and David’s property has been the site of more than a few controversies since they first moved in. After all, renovating and expanding property is more than enough stress for any new couple, and there were many times when fans weren’t sure if they could make it. But they’ve also done an impressive job of making it their own, taking numerous boat trips with their children and even installing fun updates like a personalized zipline setup for their little ones.
In fact, The Land has pretty much become its own character in the Teen Mom franchise… so it’s no wonder fans are freaking out that it may soon be destroyed!
During this week’s episode of Teen Mom 2, Jenelle and David face off against the elements — and it’s not looking pretty.
In an early scene, Jenelle explains the problem to her friend. “Look at my ceiling,” she says. “It’s cracking!”
“The company, they build modular homes,” she says. “The homes guy in Wilmington, he’s been arguing with us back and forth. He’s trying to say we put too much dirt on the land to fill our puddles and that we’re making all the water go down under our house.” She says, “We’re like, ‘Dude, you didn’t make the housepad big enough for the first place.’ It was flooded to begin with, and there’s water under our house. Our house is sinking basically!”
“We have the vice president coming tomorrow from corporate,” David explains, adding, “It’s really obvious that I’m right.”
“I’m running some errands today,” Jenelle explained in a voice over for the episode. “But David’s going to show the vice president of the modular home company all the issues we’re having with our house.”
In the episode, David gives the VP a piece of his mind.
“I told them from the very beginning, this is a wet area. I need at least twelve inches of dirt under my house. They put four inches of dirt when I asked for twelve,” he revealed. “They said, ‘Oh, no, well the inspector said it was fine!’... This is not how it had to be. This is wrong.”
He added, “This is probably the worst of the problem inside. See this area? There’s way more than the usual amount of settling happening in my house. My house is sinking!”
“They’ve never made any positive drainage! I’ve built houses, and I’ve rebuilt houses, and I’ve rebuilt foundations of houses. You can take that idea and shove it up your a** ‘cause my house is falling into mud.”
He makes it very clear that he expects changes from the company. “I want my house on stilts or raised up or some dirt under it.” Then he vaguely threatens, “If I got to pay for it, I guarantee you… My wife has got about, I don’t know, 12 million followers on social media…”
But it’s clear that this is an ongoing problem for the family. In a later scene, Jenelle and David let off more steam about the state of their home.
“So when the modular home company came here, he talked to me for a while but he just didn’t seem to understand the true problem,” David reveals.
“It’s like, every time they come here, they want to tell me ‘Well, I think we should put a little drain in here, a little pump under the house, maybe we should grade some dirt.’ I basically told him that that’s not gonna work,” David says.
“Do they not realize our house is sinking in the soft soil that we got right now?” Jenelle exclaims.
David reveals he said, “I told him, ‘My house is sinking in the ground and it’s your fault because I told you this was going to be a problem before it even happened.’ He can be a hero and come and raise up my house, or he can be a bad guy and I can take him to court.”
“If we go to court, that means the inspector will get fired, the manager will lose his job…” Jenelle says. “All that can be avoided. I don’t want drama! I don’t want cracks in my house, and I don’t want to think that it’s sinking while I’m sleeping!”
“I have faith that they will come out and fix our problem,” David reassures her. “I really do.”
Unfortunately, it might not be that easy. No matter how much Jenelle and David face off with the company that built their home, it seems that The Land may simply not be capable of sustaining such a structure.
According to a Teen Mom fan on reddit who is in the process of building a house themself, the type of soil that Jenelle and David built their property on is not well conditioned for a building of that type. The soil is “Goldsboro fine sandy loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes,” and it is “very limited” according to the USDA ranking. This means "the soil has one or more features that are unfavorable for the specified use. The limitations generally cannot be overcome without major soil reclamation, special design, or expensive installation procedures. Poor performance and high maintenance can be expected,” according to reddit user LolNopeNuhUh. They add that “This is the worst rating given,” and that “The depth to dig to hit water is 1 foot, which is extremely shallow.”
They went on:
“So, yeah, they pretty much built on a swamp without taking the necessary precautions to stabilize the foundation. The reason manufactured homes are so popular in that area is because foundations on sandy soil tend to sink and shift. With a manufactured home you can cheaply have someone come out and re-level it when needed. Since they purchased what I assume to be a modular (which is placed on a foundation and usually appraises just like stick built homes), that thing is dropping faster than Jenelle's feelings.”
Unfortunately, it’s not looking very good for Jenelle and David. Most fans’ advice for the newlyweds? Abandon ship!
“If they were smart they’d cut their losses here,” wrote user PPPenelope. User JessicaMaple joked, “Hire someone to burn it down, don't get caught, collect the insurance check, get the heck outta dodge.”
Others believe that if this information is true, Jenelle and David are totally responsible for the state of their house.
“It’s also very common for these types of homes to sink,” wrote ColesExperience. “Idk why she and David are making such a big deal about it as the builder told them prior to the building process. There are many finishing issues that cannot be started until the house starts sinking.” They added, “My sister has almost this exact model in TN and they had to wait to do the seaming, crown molding in some of the rooms and a few other details until the sinking is complete. It’s similar to a house settling. When this starts to happen the builders come in and address all of the issues free of charge. It’s really not a big deal.”
“Although I’ll be the first to admit that where she lives is all swamp,” they went on. “Not sea, swamp. I’m from the area and I really can’t believe they let her build a modular home there when they know the homes sink anyway let alone on that f*cking mud.”
User Petty_White questioned, “They should have known this going in, and would have if they were being responsible. Is it possible they did know and built/bought the land anyway because that land was cheaper than something better suited for building? This seems so dumb on their part, I can't figure it out. Why did they want this plot so much?” wiredmomm pointed out, “I remember her posting about soil testing* the land so they definitely knew.”
It’s no wonder that this update has fans worried about Jenelle and her childrens’ future prospects. “Honestly jenelle’s and the kids futures scare me once the show ends or Jenelle gets axed. They are gonna be so deep in debt. Money problems tends to cause a lot of divorces and other grim outcomes. From what I gathered it’s a pretty expensive upkeep and they aren’t being frugal with their money either. They are blowing through money with multiple vacations a year plus all those shiny toys for the kids and David. It’s a giant recipe for disaster,” added misspriss91.
It’s no wonder that fans have been concerned about Jenelle and David’s family recently, but their sinking home is not the only reason. Recently, Jenelle and her husband have come under fire for their treatment of their children — and even Jenelle seeming to claim that her son Kaiser could have an eating disorder.
In a previous episode of Teen Mom 2, Jenelle and David take a break from their sinking home to go on a skiing trip for Jenelle’s birthday. What starts out as a fun family vacation soon takes a turn for the worse.
During a scene in which Jenelle and her family eat breakfast, fans were shocked by how high David’s temper seemed to be with his step-children.
“The weekend was going great, but last night, the kids were acting up and we didn’t get any sleep,” Jenelle explains in the voice-over. “We were planning to do something fun before we went home today, but David and I are exhausted.”
“These kids are f*cking driving me nuts,” David says while cooking breakfast. “They’re about to go to their bedrooms to take a nap. ‘Cause ever since I woke up, they’ve been running around, like, going crazy.”
In the next room, Kaiser appears to be playing on the couch. “I don’t understand what his problem is!” Jenelle exclaims.
David’s temper has made numerous appearances on the show, but the way that he dealt with Jenelle’s son Kaiser made fans very uncomfortable.
After Jenelle and David get upset with Kaiser for spilling his juice, Kaiser says that he has to “go poo.”
“No! You already did this morning!” Jenelle exclaims, but Kaiser says, “I’m going to poop in my pants.”
David is not having it. “If you poop in your pants, you’re going to be in big trouble mister. You just went to the potty. Stop it. Eat your food.”
Even though it’s not the first time we’ve seen Jenelle and David get strict with their kids, fans were more than a little perturbed that David forbade Kaiser from going to the bathroom when he asked to. In fact, even Nathan and his girlfriend Ashley had something to say about it.
“Kaiser says he needs to poop and they said he couldn’t go potty. He says I’m gonna poop my pants and he gets told he’ll be in trouble if he does...yet they won’t let him to go to the bathroom. What a mind f*ck!” wrote Twitter user @HoeStephan. Nathan’s girlfriend Ashley responded, “This isn’t the first time kaiser told [Nathan] & I he was not allowed to go potty. Probably why when he pees the bed at night he tries to hide it by changing his clothes and hiding them.”
She added, “Before someone tries to poke holes in my story , Kaiser did not use the exact words ‘I’m not allowed.’ I stated that referencing what he has told us multiple times. ANY time he says he has to go potty [Nathan] takes him. No matter how many times a day he says it.”
But even though many fans were critical of David and Jenelle’s parenting, some were quick to come to their defense. Jenelle soon began interacting with fans on Twitter who defended her with similar experiences.
Jenelle retweeted one fan’s experience: “The dinner table scene where Kaiser said he had to use the bathroom reminded me of my daughter,” wrote Twitter user @hannahpolakowski. “Every dinner she would say she had to go just so she didn't have to eat. And once we caught on to what she was doing, we started saying no too. She grew out of that phase eventually.”
But Jenelle also retweeted another fans’ experience that was much different. User @JADRunyan wrote, “My daughter (11) has an eating disorder... Was hospitalized for it for three months this year.. She did this frequently (going to the bathroom) to use eating disorder behaviors. Good for you for catching on and not allowing him to go. I say ALL the time she isn't allowed to go.”
Obviously, fans were shocked that Jenelle would imply her situation is similar to this mother’s.
“I highly HIGHLY doubt a 3 year old has an eating disorder,” wrote @MrsCannasutra. “Yeah great comparison. The preteen who's been toilet trained for years (hopefully) to the toddler who is just getting out of diapers. She did the right thing, don't want Kaiser purging the dinner he hasn't eaten yet ” wrote @Youretheworst2.
User @kaylene_hawkins agreed, “He’s a freaking 3 year old, this is a time to teach, encourage and nurture him and let him express himself and find out just who Kaiser is as a human. Not force him to eat or threaten him if he has an accident. This is such an important age to listen and learn who your child is.”
Fans on reddit were similarly amazed.
“This woman's daughter is 11, Kaiser is not even 4,” worte user Copcardramatics. “Do 4 year olds even have the mental capacity to have an eating disorder? Jenelle fans are literally insane, and she buys right into and uses it to justify her actions. You couldn't make this sh*t up!”
User shenanigansarefun wrote, “ Let the kid poop. It’s not healthy to hold it. She’s gonna give him anxiety and shame about using the toilet and he’s never going to potty train. If he has to go you stop and take him. And if they eat around the same time of day it could just happen to be the time he has to go number two. Hell for a year I was on the same schedule every day at what time I had to use the bathroom around.”
