Even though they created one of the most popular reality shows in history, it's no secret that MTV has also made some pretty big mistakes in its past.
The network has been slammed time and time again for airing controversial footage of the Teen Mom stars in some of their darkest hours. Most recently, MTV has come under fire for airing footage of Ryan Edwards driving while he was high. But is it possible that they've outdone themselves?
Now, MTV is being slammed for hiring "racists, drug addicts, and potential rapists"... by one of their former employees!
When Teen Mom first began to air on MTV, the producers saw it as a way to document what it was like to balance the struggles of being a new mother with the struggles of being a teenager. Although it started out as a docu-series, it quickly evolved into a cultural phenomenon with a huge following.
But that doesn't mean MTV has always made the right choices when it comes to the Teen Mom franchise, and one of its recent decisions is extremely controversial.
Last fall, MTV revealed a shocking decision to part ways with Teen Mom OG star Farrah Abraham. The decision came after Farrah refused to pump the breaks on her adult video career or to treat Teen Mom producers with more respect. After a tense scene between her and the producers, Farrah was fired from the show.
While this was a controversial choice for many reasons, most fans were still happy to tune in to a Farrah-free show. For the rest of the season, Teen Mom OG only focused on Amber Portwood, Catelynn Lowell, and Maci Bookout. However, MTV quickly made it clear that they will be replacing Farrah with a new cast member … and it’s not going over very well.
MTV’s pick to replace Farrah is controversial for several different reasons. For starters, the newest addition to the cast, Cheyenne Floyd, has never appeared in a 16 and Pregnant or Teen Mom before. Needless to say, she doesn’t quite fit into the “OG” category. But also, Cheyenne is not and was not ever a teen mom, since she didn’t have her first child until she was 24!
But according to some of her co-stars, Cheyenne is hiding much more than just that.
Soon after news of Cheyenne’s casting leaked, fans discovered some dark parts of her history. After some inflammatory tweets surfaced, Cheyenne was accused of being racist and even murderous.
“This little white kid told me I looked like a cat today. I shoulda kicked him,” reads one of Cheyenne’s tweets from 2012 that has been circulating. One from 2011 reads, “My mom said I can’t see The Help, she knows I already have a problem with white people.”
These tweets are upsetting to many, but they’re nothing compared to the last one: “Last night I saw it and I wanted to kill every white person I saw.”
She also retweeted a tweet that read “[Cheyenne] and [another Twitter user] are the only nazi-loving, black power-having, ‘kill-a-white-baby-if-I-could’ people I can accept & adore.”
Obviously, these tweets are several years old, and Cheyenne has had a lot of time to change since then… but fans are pretty angry that MTV decided to hire her regardless.
“You cannot say sh*t like this and then become a paid TV personality and expect it to be okay. Sh*t on the internet does not go away. You f*cked up. I hope MTV would not offer a job to anyone that said something like this towards any group of people. The end,” wrote reddit user Floflo80.
User silver_kays wrote, “If people online easily found this you’d think whoever does the research for hiring would see it too. Media loves feeding the racism fire. It’s a ‘hot topic’ in their eyes and it makes me sick.”
Obviously, fans aren’t very happy with this pick — but now one former Teen Mom star is speaking out as well.
Jenelle Evans' husband David Eason has a long history of getting on the bad side of MTV. In fact, he was recently fired from Teen Mom 2 after going on a homophobic rant on his Twitter. It’s no surprise that he isn’t a huge fan of the network, but now he’s speaking out against them.
“WOW MTV Ive kept my mouth shut for too long!” David raged in a lengthy Facebook rant. “MTV is such a hypocritical liberal network that you still keep racists, drug addicts and potential rapists on your shows as long as it meets your political beliefs? (Yet you are against gun rights which protects my family from those kind of people).”
David soon made it clear that his rant was directed at Cheyenne. “I’m sickened to hear that Cheyenne Floyd said she hates white people and wants to kill them all!” he wrote. “WELL HOLY SH!T I’m the bad guy even though I never said I hated anyone or wanted to kill them. Yet I received death threats from you morons?”
But Cheyenne isn’t the only MTV star that David takes issue with. He also attacked Catfish host Nev Shulman, who was recently accused of lewd misconduct by a former cast member.
“Come on people, MTV still works with Nev Schulman from Catfish even though he tried to sexually assault his timid vulnerable cast members!” David raged.
As a fan on Instagram pointed out, MTV resumed filming on Catfish after their investigations found the acusations to be “not credible.”
The fan wrote, “Nev has been cleared,” to which David responded, “How was he cleared? Because he hasn’t been charged yet? What have I not been cleared of, I never did anything to anyone.”
However, there are no accusations for David to be “cleared” of; there is ample evidence of the offenses that MTV decided to fire him for. Soon after he got a Twitter, David spent a length of time sharing his homophic and transphobic views on the site.
“Lmao why don’t you go tell the homo and transgender parents to start teaching their kids better morals? Oh I forgot thats supposed to be normal,” David wrote in a recent tweet which followed months of bigoted comments from the star.
When one fan asked, “Who are you to say what’s normal or what’s moral? Are you going to teach your children to hate gay and transgender people?” David revealed that he plans to raise Jace, Kaiser, Ensley, and Maryssa to be homophobic and bigoted.
“No, Im going to teach them not to associate with them or be that way…” he said. “If you lay down with dogs you get up with fleas.”
When fans accused him of being homophobic, he said, “Never said anything about being scared [of] homos,” he wrote. “Homophobic? You really lost it now, im not scared [of] s**t especially a homo.”
Soon, fans made it clear that they were not interested in watching Teen Mom 2 if it involved an openly homophobic and transphobic cast member. Fans began circulating a petition to fire David which soon gained over 9,000 signatures. Apparently, the fans’ demands apparently became too much for MTV to ignore.
“David Eason’s personal comments do not reflect the views of MTV. With six weeks left of production on ‘Teen Mom 2,’ effective immediately, we are ending our relationship with him,” read a statement by MTV released Feb. 20, 2018.
Much like Farrah before him, David included a call-out to MTV producers in his rant. “I mean why else would the head producers be the ones spreading all the lies on the internet with media outlets? Huh Morgan?” he wrote. “Just for the record THE VIEWS, OPINIONS OR DEPICTIONS OF MYSELF BY MTV DOES NOT REPRESENT MY BELIEFS OR MORAL VALUES AND STANDARDS!”
Even though David claims to be happy to stand by his words, Jenelle is quick to come to his defense. “I don’t get if someone was raised with certain morals, values, and standards… a very Christian man… why would you try to push him to think the opposite just because you don’t agree?!” she tweeted around the time of David’s rant. “F**k you.”
She soon added, “I will stand by my husband and his opinions until the day we die. I’m sorry he offended anyone in the past, but he doesn’t HATE anyone. Never said that word. We all have opinions and sometimes they can be a**holes, everyone has one. Hanging on every word ever spoke. #Crazy.”
In fact, Jenelle is threatening to pull out the big guns over this feud with MTV. Now that Teen Mom 2 has been renewed for season 9, she’s threatening not to return unless MTV allows David to be part of the cast again.
When a fan asked Jenelle if she’d be appearing on the show, she responded, ““We will see! So far not looking pretty.”
David isn’t exactly the most popular Teen Mom star, so it’s no surprise that fans decidedly did not have his back over this controversy.
“Oh David get over it, you’re not getting your job back,” wrote reddit user wheniwasayoungboy__. “Aw the homophobic, racist, woman abusing, drug addict is mad that MTV won’t let him travel on their dime. Must be soooo hard for him. Poor baby,” wrote kelseyxiv.
Many pointed out that David dragged MTV for hiring drug users even though his own wife is a former addict. “Jenelle has been in photos & videos on drugs & with drugs in the background. She wished death on a Marine on video. David has said racist & homophobe things on Twitter. David supposedly beat his ex while pregnant with his child. I'm sure this list could go on & on... Y'all need to take a seat,” wrote CarCatMeow. User swirleytundra919 wrote, “He is very good at rewriting history. It’s not like Jenelle was high off of heroin on national tv or failed a drug test while pregnant with his child..”
But not everyone entirely disagreed with David’s sentiments. “I do think he has a small point,” wrote BubblyTummy. “That new girl whose name I already forget did tweet that she would like to kill babies. That’s pretty bad and MTV should not be considering her for a position that nobody seems to want her in in the first place. David is still a terrible human. And a total hypocrite. But he does have a point.”
“You know what I can't believe im saying this buy he is absolutly right,” wrote i-am-canadian-sorry. “Yes David is a POS and what he said was bad but MTV needs to set the same standards for everyone no matter how much money they're bringing to the network. If they actually hire that [Cheyenne] Girl for OG I will not be watching, it would be the same for if someone was [racist] to black people I would absolutly refuse to watch them.”
