Will they work it out?
Leah Messer has had a tumultuous run on Teen Mom 2. The 25-year-old reality star has dealt with rumors of addiction, accusations of bad parenting, poor decision making, depression, anxiety, and so much more. Seriously, that list just scratches the surface! For once, though, Leah’s not in the headlines for negative reasons. This time, Leah’s estranged father has come out of the woodwork wanting to make amends and it looks like the Teen Mom might be ready to hear him out. Or, at least, more prepared than she’s been in the past.
“When your dad calls and you haven’t heard from him in quite some timeee.. Do you answer or let your voicemail do the talking?” Leah tweeted to her followers last week. She then revealed that she did answer the phone this time, apparently opening herself up to giving her troubled father another chance.
As fans will recall, it was a little over six months ago that Radar Online broke the story that Leah’s father was arrested in Florida in 2011 for possession of a controlled substance and kicked off the questions about Leah’s mysterious father.
While Gary Messer claimed that he had a prescription for the painkillers that were on his person at the time of his arrest, he had a harder time explaining why he was giving a pill to a woman on the street and why the pills were not in a prescription bottle at the time. He ultimately wasn’t prosecuted for the crimes, but the damage to his relationship with his famous daughter was clearly already done. Even before his arrest, Gary was nowhere to be seen in the Teen Mom-verse. Could that all be changing now?
Leah’s Twitter reveal about talking to her father again came with a lot more information about her childhood with her father than we’ve had before. She told supportive fans that her “entire childhood was a ‘what if'” thanks to her father and that she was conflicted about answering because “something you have to let toxic relationships go.”
It appears that the support from her fan base and their urging for her to make amends got the best of her since she did, in fact, end up answering. “It’s the same thing every call. Maybe this time he really is going to choose life over death. All I can do is [praying emoji],” she wrote after their conversation.
Leah is rumored to know the struggle with addiction very well and first hand. Although Leah continues to deny that her 2015 stint in a rehab facility was related to a problem with prescription painkiller abuse, the rumors that she had a problem persist thanks to… well, the fact that she can be seen nodding off in numerous scenes on MTV and, you know, the fact that her friends and family confirmed it.
Either way, a struggle against your own body — whether related to addiction or a mental health crisis — can really change a person’s outlook on what is important. Is it possible that Leah’s battles with her own demons, regardless of what they were, has helped open her up to reuniting with her father after all?
We have to say that we kind of hope so! While we would never advocate one of the Teen Moms allowing toxic people back into their lives, it’d be pretty awesome to see Leah makeup with her dad after all this time! Here’s to hoping that her experiment in re-connecting ends up happy and healthy for everyone involved!
