Take it down!
Having every moment of your life televised means that some pretty unflattering things are going to get out to the public. Even while the cameras aren’t rolling, having paparazzi and intense fans to worry about can make it difficult to get a moment of privacy. That means not everything that makes it to the public is going to reflect well on you.
The Teen Mom girls are used to looking less-than-great when it comes to their public image, so it takes some seriously bad press coming out for them to put up a fight. Apparently for Kailyn, this photo was so bad that she demanded her employer, MTV, take it down immediately!
“Delete that immediately”
Announcing your baby’s birth is a huge part of any mother’s life. Many send out announcements or post to social media with the cutest pictures of their children. But when you’re a Teen Mom, you can’t always control what pictures make it out for general consumption. In the season finale of Teen Mom 2, Kailyn gave birth to Lux after having a breakdown at the thought of having to raise him alone.
MTV tweets many updates about the cast’s lives during the show, and they tend to be pretty celebratory. Even though the above post was nothing but congratulatory, the photo they used really rubbed Kailyn the wrong way.
They posted this snap of the newborn Lux, writing, “It’s a beautiful baby boy! Congratulations on your new addition to the family, @KailLowry #TeenMom2.” Apparently, Kailyn wasn’t happy with Lux’s expression, as she replied almost immediately, “That was super unflattering. Please delete that immediately.”
Was Kailyn taking it too far with this complaint? The truth is, sometimes babies make unattractive faces — they’re babies, after all — but at the same time, having someone else post pictures of your child without your consent can get pretty frustrating if they don’t look the way you’d like.
Many fans were divided between the two viewpoints.
Shallow or Justified?
“Stop caring about the image of a newborn, Kail,” wrote Reddit user ItsNeverMyDay. OwlEyesJenn called her “Shallow.” User B*tchcat pointed out, “Parents i hate to tell you this, but not every picture of your kid is precious and amazing. Sometimes they look like gremlins.”
But others could see where Kailyn was coming from.
DumpsterFolk totally understood the “Boy Mom’s” qualms. “The fact they used that picture to announce/congratulate the birth would annoy me,” they wrote. “It is a bad pic, and I would have taken it as them being snide/mean rather than genuinely congratulatory. I think Kail’s response is understandable.”
User l0vefrequency agreed, “I don’t blame her because some asshole will turn it into a meme or something. Under normal circumstances, it wouldn’t be a big deal but with the way that she gets pummeled on social media, I think she’s right to ask them to remove it before it blows up into something gross.”
As user SmlRabbit pointed out, there might be something else at play in Kailyn’s decision, too. Since Lux’s birth, Lowry and her family have been battling racist and offensive comments from some particularly hateful viewers.
“We all know she’s gotten plenty racist remarks about him, I can’t say I blame her for being sensitive about what’s posted of him after everything that’s been said already,” the fan pointed out.
User Mattisnotmybabydaddy agreed: “Are we not all on the same internet? People have talked shit on her and her son, racist remarks and such. I don’t blame her one bit for her comment.”
